One needs more than familiarity with individual components to formulate the ideal solution for today‘s drive assignments. To name just one example, Ziehl-Abegg has become more than just a manufacturer of motors with a long tradition in elevator technology. With the development of electronic regulator units designed specifically for elevator drives the firm has become a systems supplier with a steady eye on the lift as a whole.

The experience of lift planners and operators shows that the total cost of lift door components accounts on average for 10 % of the investment involved in installing a lift system. Surveys carried out among reputable specialist lift and building logistics planners also show that this area of the lift, i.e. the doors, is the cause of up to 90 per cent of all faults encountered in lift systems. The root causes are varied and are often linked to inappropriate treatment by users or other external influences. However, the primary reason why faults occur in lift doors is the use of what are considered to be low cost components.

“Innovations for the Elevator Market” – subtitled “New Plant and Modernization” – was the theme chosen for the 23rd Heilbronn Lift Conference. The event took place on March 7 and 8, 2006, and, as in past years, was hosted by the Heilbronn Technical Academy. Prof. G. Clauss of the Academy delivered the welcoming address while O. Bielmeier, B. Engr., who was responsible for the conference’s conceptualization and conduct, delivered a keynote speech underscoring the significance of the elevator modernization market, making particular note of safety aspects. He also stressed that ride comfort and system availability should also be taken into consideration.
