The service lives of running wire ropes are dependent above all on rope tensile force S/d2 and the ratio of the diameters of the sheave and the rope D/d. Additional significant factors are rope diameter d and the length of the section of the rope that is actually subjected to bending l. The method used for calculating rope drives in the past [1] did not take sufficient account of these influences. In the present paper the factors associated with flexure – the bending cycle factors – are modified to take into account to the greatest possible extent the influences of the rope diameter and of the section exposed to bending. In addition to the sources cited, a prime source of information was data drawn from the archives of the Institute of Mechanical Handling and Logistics (IFT) at the University of Stuttgart, where Professor K.-H. Wehking is Head of the institute.

An event turning into a tradition

The European Lift Congress Heilbronn (ELCH) took place on October 19 and 20 for the fourth time. More than a 100 participants mainly from European countries and two from faraway Japan again gathered in the Technical Academy of Heilbronn to listen to interesting papers presented by 15 speakers on safety , sustainability and technical innovation topics and to make new contacts on the occasion of an evening social gathering. The positive response to the congress encourages the organizers to start making plans for the ELCH in 2012 straight away.

From the point of view of visitor response, the 2010 fairs with common VFA stands on nearly all continents turned out to be a full success. The participating member companies emphasized the major benefits arising from their commitment in India, Brazil and (for the first time) Poland. They believe that their attendance is a springboard to new markets, new customers and partners and provides direct access to market information. The service offered by the VFA warrants an attractive fair attendance with only a minor amount of personal expenditure at low cost. Praise was also given to the high level of planning security and the strong umbrella organization with the “Made in Germany” reputation.

After a service life of twenty years or more, the car doors tend to be the part of the lift that displays the most wear, and in many cases, it is a difficult task to locate any necessary spare parts. As a result, repairs often consist of adapting individual components in the existing transom. A standard solution often proves a complex and expensive process, despite expectations of affordable prices, and is not even coordinated to match the door.
