During the last decades, significant improvements of the quality and safety of the lifts have been taken place on a European level. This is due both to the modern technological advancements achieved in the sector and the compulsory application of the Lift Directive 95/16/EC. One area of concern, in order to reach the desirable quality and safety standards of the lifts, is their use in a building during emergency outbreaks. This article aims to illustrate the experience gained by the Europeans regarding the use of such lifts as described on the requirements introduced by the new European Standards.

The event, held from March 18 to 20, 2009, was both innovative and highly topical. 220 participants from 29 countries confirmed the professional expertise of both the organizers and the speakers. It was on the occasion of the 3rd International Ropes Conference at Stuttgart, organized in cooperation with the University of Stuttgart and the Institute of Mechanical Handling and Logistics (ift), that the OIPEEC held its 24th General Assembly. This lent a special note to the event, which was held in a unique setting – the historical equestrian training facility at the Maritim Hotel in Stuttgart’s center city. The program arranged for those persons accompanying the participants was much appreciated and included a tour of both the ift and Stuttgart’s sights, a boat trip on the River Neckar to the new Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, and a guided tour through 120 years of automotive history.

The Spanish Lift Community held their 2009 exhibition in the historic city of Barcelona and under the shadow of the expo obelisks which rise like two lift shafts from the central plaza between the exhibition halls of Fira Barcelona. The Ele-Espa˜na exhibition was inspired by the late Jordi Corominas who unfortunately died this year from cancer and I am sure will greatly be missed by the Spanish elevator community as a whole. Jordi Corominas along with Joseph Steir have ensured that Spain has a showcase event and it will be for the new generation of Lift professionals to take what has been started and ensure it develops and grows to answer the future needs of the Spanish elevator industry.
