21st Century skyscraper gets 21st Century Lift Monitoring System
Lift display and control specialist E-Motive has supplied a Lift Monitoring System to the new Constellation Place office tower in Los Angeles, California. The 35-story building, also known as MGM Tower for its lead tenant, is the first skyscraper of the 21st century to be built in Los Angeles.

The Lift Monitoring System is the first system installed in the US by E-Motive for Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics (USA). It will be the central monitoring station for all of the 22 lifts in the building. The monitoring system tracks real-time lift movement and the current status of all the cars (including, but not limited to, position, travel direction, door status, and car/hall calls). Remote operational control allows management of various commands to each lift including placement of car calls, floor lockout and return operation. With the system, users can schedule changes, such as peak time service, or access lifts in real-time for immediate control.
The monitoring system also includes an Advanced Traffic Analysis package to diagnose lift problems and evaluate performance. The performance of each lift is presented in the form of graphic analysis. Consultants and building owners can track vital statistics such as average hall call waiting times, maximum waiting times, percentage of long waits, and hall call counts for each lift or specific landings. An IBM compatible PC with an MS Windows NT platform provides users with a familiar graphical point and click interface for ease of use.
The system was installed by Mitsubishi Electric and Electronics‘ Lift and Escalator Division and uses Mitsubishi‘s serial protocol. This serial protocol reduces the amount of wires required from each lift group controller, simplifying installation and saving on labour costs.
With offices in Singapore, China and the United States, E-Motive offers a full range of lift display solutions, from simple LED position indicators to advanced full colour audio-video LCD displays, as well as customised lift monitoring systems.
