European Lift Congress Heilbronn, June 28 + 29, 2005

For over 20 years the Heilbronn Technical Academy is organizing lift seminars in the German language. The event that is most noted and has the longest tradition is the ”Heilbronner Aufzugstage“ which is known far beyond the borders of Germany and which welcomes more than 250 participants every year. The steering committee of these seminars has now decided to extend the existing programme and organize for the first time an international congress.

The premiere of the ”European Lift Congress Heilbronn“ will take place in Heilbronn/Germany on June 28 + 29, 2005. It will generally be held in two languages (German and English). The papers will be simultaneously interpreted. The congress will be supported by the European Lift Association ELA, the European Confederation of Organisations for Inspection CEOC, the German manufacturer associations VDMA and VFA as well as the German Federation of Technical Inspection Services VdTÜV.

The European Lift Congress Heilbronn will concentrate on the ”Codes and Standards for Lifts“. Apart from some basic explanations relating to the background and mechanisms of European regulations, papers will primarily refer to the current changes in the field of European directives and harmonized standards. The congress addresses authorities, consultants, inspection bodies, manufacturers, owners and all other interested circles dealing with lifts and their relevant regulations. Since Germany is so close to the new Member States in Eastern Europe, the congress is particularly interesting for participants from these countries who only dispose of a limited travelling budget.

The programme, too, has been tailored to the needs of the new Member States where European regulations are in force since May 2004 und now have to be put into practice. An introductory paper will explain the principles of European regulations. Topics such as the New Approach of European directives on the basis of the Treaty of Rome, the function of harmonized standards, the co-operation of European organizations on the subject of the generation and review of European directives as well as other fundamental correlations will be explained. The European directives relating to lifts and their contents will be presented. Subjects of topical interest will be the review of the Machinery Directive as well as recent discussions on the Lift Directive.

A representative of one of the new member states will report on the national implementation of the European regulations in his country and on the experience gathered in the process. In another paper the co-ordination of notified bodies in Europe, their organization and modus operandi as well as some current topics of this co-ordination group will be discussed. A paper on the European standardization procedures for lifts will relate to the organization of CEN/TC 10, the procedure to generate a new standard and the essential contents of lift standards already published. Other papers will present the essential contents of new standards and of standards still in preparation. Some particularly important standards will be dealt with in more detail. The last part of the congress will concentrate on the safety of existing lifts and on the European and national regulations intended to improve the safety level.

The mainly theoretical reflections on codes and standards will be supported by some reports on technical innovations. New lift systems with substantially reduced well dimensions, the implementation of programmable electronic systems in safety-related applications of lifts, optimized mechanical components as well as solutions improving the fire protection in buildings will be presented. In the breaks between papers an exhibition will allow participants to learn more about innovative lift components. The contacts established and the discussions held during these breaks and during the evening programme will help to answer any remaining questions.

The event takes place in the Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences to which the Heilbronn Technical Academy e. V. is affiliated. Heilbronn is a regional centre between Frankfurt and Stuttgart in Southern Germany. The city and its surroundings are marked by the automobile industry and associated suppliers and are an important trade centre. Local companies such as Bosch, Audi, Läpple, Getrag and Würth carry the name of Heilbronn and its surroundings all over the world. Heilbronn is situated in one of Germany’s biggest vine-growing regions. The outskirts and environs of Heilbronn offer ample opportunities for sightseeing tours and excursions.
