Trade fair offshoots … and here’s another association
interlift 2005
It always happens that somewhere, some time, some people do not feel taken seriously or sufficiently represented and they get together to form an association of their own. That is how in April 2005 the EFESME (European Federation for Elevator Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) came to be founded. It is to represent the interests of small and medium-sized lift enterprises in the construction, installation and maintenance sectors. Its headquarters are in Brussels. The membership consists essentially of Italian firms that have decided to join.

It does not intend to operate in opposition to other associations, but simply wants to represent the interests of members who do not feel sufficiently represented by the ELA. It wants to work with higher institutions in the formulation of laws and the drawing up of basic regulations. An effort will be made to canvass membership from existing national associations in the European Community, but individual firms can also become members. Its management will be in the hands of a Board of Administration with a president, vice-president and treasurer selected from amongst its members, and confirmed by the general meeting. At the moment the association is run by Italians. At the press conference at the interlift, contacts were made with Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, and membership of the relevant associations will be applied for shortly. Contacts were also made with the VmA. The next members’ meeting will be held in Milan when the LIFT takes place. As a neutral participant at the meeting in Augsburg one can’t help asking: “Was this really necessary?”
Lift News Asansör
Lift-Report considered current reporting from the Turkish point of view an impressive achievement. Pictures and the previous day’s lectures presented in a good layout deserve serious recognition. Congratulations!
China marching ahead
At this year’s interlift, the number of exhibitors from China reached record peaks, making third place after Germany and Italy as regards the number of exhibitors. The AFAG took this huge number into consideration by engaging a special contact for Chinese exhibitors. Visitors to the fair found that numerous Chinese exhibitors were competent English speakers who were in the position to provide information about the exhibited products.
Fifth German Operator Day
The Fifth German Operator Day took place in the course of the Interlift. Additional information is required by the operators of lift systems on account of the technical harmonization of the European market and European regulations. Those who were interested had the opportunity to get to know their responsibilities and the new requirements of the BetrSichV (German decree regulating operations). A more detailed report will be published in the next issue of Lift-Report.
Student competition on the topic of “Barrier-free living”
Average life expectancy in industrial nations will continue to rise in the coming years. However, the problems that accompany old age also increase as the population gets older. Things that presented no problems when one was young, can become a genuine difficulty in old age: walking upstairs, for instance.
With this in mind, VFA-Interlift e.V. wanted to find solutions. For the first time, a nation-wide competition was announced for architecture students in later semesters. In addition to creative aspects, the solutions were to be structurally and technically feasible, and take also take costs into account.
Three assessment rounds were made. After the final round, four contributions remained. Of these, the design submitted by Martin Sellger, Hamburg, was selected as the best. The official prize giving and honouring of the winners took place at the inauguration ceremony of the interlift’05. The best contributions to the competition were exhibited at the trade fair.
