Lift Safety – Lift GSM Alarm Systems
Ingo Boost
Scandinavia is paving the way: There, more than 45 percent of lift alarm systems are already based on GSM mobile telephoning technology. GSM is now starting to establish itself as a standard for connecting elevator alarm systems. And that for good reason: GSM solutions enable fast and flexible implementation, meet legal requirements in terms of quality and functionality, are considered to be ready for the future and also offer a savings potential when compared to conventional land line connections.

Analogue and digital phone connections via the fixed network are still more common for the time being. But both telephone networks may be outdated by 2014. The deactivation of the analogue telephone network is planned for that time as well as the provisioning of a new IP-based network, NGN (Next Generation Network). That‘s why there is currently demand for alternative solutions that meet the legal requirements for emergency systems of passenger and freight lifts pursuant to § 12 of the BetrSichV (German Operational Safety Regulations) and the European Standard EN 81-28.
Engineering of the Future with Economic Benefits
That‘s why forward-looking lift manufacturers, real estate management and housing associations rely on GSM-based emergency systems. Particularly in new and renovated buildings, their economic benefits speak for themselves, not to mention their reliability in the future. As a result, this eliminates the need for the costly and time-consuming laying of cables to connect the public telephone network with the lift‘s machine room and the emergency system. The time required for establishing an operational connection can also be reduced to a few days as there is no need to reconcile dates with the fixed network operator and the lift installer. Another advantage lies in the fact that the required emergency system is already pre-programmed making subsequent on-site installation possible within a few minutes. This flexible and rapid setup is not only in demand in special fields such as construction site lifts.
Switching to GSM lift emergency systems also quickly pays for itself. As a result, the ROI of increased costs for the GSM lift emergency systems generally corresponds to six months. After all, the GSM connection is significantly more affordable than the landline in the long run. In consideration of routine status reports and any alarms triggered, the total costs for GSM communication are also significantly less expensive than the monthly base tariff for the landline – particularly if mobile communications providers offer special tariffs for lift emergency systems.
Network Coverage and Reliability
Professional verification of the signal strength in the lift shaft is imperative. Sufficient and stable network coverage must be guaranteed at all times. For this, potential disturbance sources and interference should also be eliminated on a technical level. Regardless of the type of communication connection, it must be ensured that the lift emergency system‘s power supply functions in a reliable manner, does not react to storms and spikes and is able to bridge a potential power failure. A regular routine status report from the lift emergency system to the emergency and service communication centre as well as preventative maintenance ensure that the system is operational at all times. Some operators of emergency and service communication centres already offer daily routine status reports free-of-charge. As a result, lift operators and users are provided with considerably more safety that even goes beyond the standard EN 81 in force in Germany.
Connection to Communication Centre and Intervention
In the event of an emergency, proper technical functioning is not the only order of the day. One expects to the same degree that the communication centre is capable of dealing with the situation in a professional and conscientious manner. The employees there should receive optimal training for risk and crisis situations and also be capable of offering trapped persons psychological support for the duration of their wait - areas of competence that are imperative in an emergency. The lift technicians and/or intervention teams alerted then make sure on site that trapped persons are safely released at all times, both day and night.
Service Package with Hardware
The Bosch Communication Center offers a reliable complete solution together with renowned partners such as the manufacturer of safety switching devices and systems, SafeLine and the mobile network operator Vodafone.
